Topic: Need help with two beakers in a sealed box at 25 C problem (URGENT)  (Read 5802 times)

Two beakers are in a sealed box at 25C

One beaker has 30ml and 5.5*10^-2 M of nonvolatile nonelectrolyte.

Other beaker has 30ml of 3.5*10^-2 M of NaCl

1. What is the volume in the beaker with the aqueous solution of NaCl when equil is attained?

2. What is the volume in the beaker with the aqueous solution of a nonvolatile nonelectrolyte when equilibrium is attained, assuming ideal behavior?

I've tried a lot to find out the volume in ml. All I know is that NaCl increases while the other solution decreases.

step 1: determine the current equivalent concentrations (hint: electrolyte or non electrolyte matters here)

step 2: set up a set of equations for the concentration in each beaker with "x" denoting the amount of water that will leave to the other beaker, or will be accepted from the other beaker.

step 3: concentration of beaker 1 at the end equals concentration of beaker 2 at the end.

You should now have 3 equations with 3 unknowns ("x", concentration in beaker 1 and concentration in beaker 2), this is solvable for x, which will give you the volumes.
