I need a plausable scenario in which a strong acid, such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, would corrode some type of metal.

Look up the reactivity series. Any metal above hydrogen can displace it as H₂ from the acid, i.e., the metal can be corroded by the acid

Student coated with iron boils sulfuric acid in a capped flask, sulfuric acid splashes on him and corrodes the iron coating. ehehe

Well, a simple but extremely real scenario is the acid rain one, where nitric and sulfurous acid from the rain corrode statues, gates, etc.
