Cannizzaro reaction with aliphatic aldehydes?
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:27:52 AM »
Hi, I need to know if the Cannizzaro reaction works with aliphatic aldehydes.
The only impediment I found was, that aldehydes with alpha hydrogens undergo aldol condensation instead of Cannizzaro, and that maybe the C with the carboxilic group in aliphatic aldehydes are less reactive due to electronic effect .

Thanks

I'm assuming you're comparing this to aromatic aldehydes. Would you expect an unconjugated aliphatic aldehyde to be more or less reactive than a conjugated aldehyde? What could be in play?
