Recrystallization lab help
« on: September 18, 2011, 02:44:07 PM »
For my lab, I have to determine the identity of an unknown substance. There are 2 possibilities, Acetanilide, or Benzoic acid.
To purify, I will be using Activated charcoal, and Celite.
My question is, I'm supposed to calculate theoretical yield based on the amounts of reactants in the procedure, however, the procedure doesn't list any reactions. Is there a way to calculate the theoretical yield, or is it irrelevant, since I will be using the same substance throughout the entire lab?
Thanks!

Post the exact procedure in your lab manual. We need context to answer the question.
