materials to lower/increase humidity?
« on: October 05, 2011, 04:16:09 PM »
i need to create a low and high humidity environments and maintain them for an experiment. i'm planning to use a sealed bag or container as the environment.

however i don't know where to start especially how to create a high humidity environment.

for the low humidity environment i was thinking of sticking some type of desiccant with an indicator into a sealed container or bag, like silica.....but if anyone has a better suggestion i'm all ears.

i also don't know where to post this....here or analytical chemistry forum

A dish of water in a sealed container will do that.

Silica get would do (and is commonly used for) the job. Other possibilities are Calcium Sulfate (aka Drierite, which is also sold mixed with indicator), calcium chloride, sodium chloride, even rice. There are many.
