Why is the Para-position more stabile then the ortho-position

I wasn't sure it was, on the whole. What factors do you know that influence stability?

For example: temperature.
And I know, that the para-product is preferred at low temperatures and the ortho-product at high temperatures.
But that doesnt help me with the question of stability :/

Stable in what sense? And with which substituents?

It seems to me that most of the variation between ortho and para products for an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction, for example, can be accounted for by sterics or by directing effects. I'm not sure what evidence you are relying on for concluding that the para position in general is more stable than the ortho position, or even what the statement is intended to refer to.
