Acidity and Basicity
« on: December 09, 2011, 12:31:17 AM »
Please help me explain acidity and basicity of these compound:

1) Basicity: CH3CN> C6H5-CH2NH2

2) Acidity: CH3COCH2COCH3> EtOH> CH3COCH3> Et2NH

Tks in advance :)

Please read the Forum Rules.

You must show an attempt. Think about the factors that affect acidity/basicity, and then apply those principles to the problem.

These factors are discussed in every organic chemistry textbook.

1) this is a question about the effect of hybridization. Why is acetylene more acidic than ethylene which is acidic than ethane. Obviously, the question is not about acidity, but basicity.

2) This is actually a mixing of different effects, so you might answer why acetoacetate is more acidic than acetone or why ethanol is more acidic than diethylamine.
