making nitrocellulose
« on: January 29, 2016, 05:20:12 AM »
Hi,
I tried to make nitrocellulose but it failed.

I used 165ml H2SO4+100g KNO3+9g cotton fluff.
I placed it in a cooling bath.
First I put the KNO3 (slowly) in the H2SO4 and then I added the cotton.
The first cotton fluffs I added seemed to solve.
I let it nitrate for maybe 45 minutes and then I added water and washed the fluffs.
After drenching in water several times I let them dry.
While washing I noticed small hard pieces which looked like celluloid.
When it was dry I lighted several but they did not burn as quickly as they normally should.

So what did I do wrong?
