Hydrazine Production
« on: April 01, 2005, 03:16:48 AM »
Hello,

I recently read that hydrazine (N2H4) can be obtained from a 3 stage reaction involving sodium hypochlorite and ammonia (something you really shouldn't do)

I know how dangerous Hydrazine is, and its strange that you could be able to produce it with such a simple method.
Does this really work?

Thanks.

First, the concept is correct, but the actual practice isn't.  The presence of calcium ions inhibits the reaction, and with household chemicals that you would be able to purchase, calcium ions are everywhere.

You are quite correct in saying how dangerous hydrazine is.  It is quite toxic.  This sounds like a KBD (kEwL bOmBz dUdE) post, but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt.
