Mole Question, confused
« on: January 24, 2012, 04:05:05 AM »
Hello everyone, I recently purchased a high school chem book just for some fun but have become quite confused and was hoping someone could assist me.

Q : The concentration of MgCl2 in a certain solution was 0.3 mol L-1. State the concentration of the Cl- ions in this solution.

A : 0.6 mol L-1

Could someone please explain to me how this is possible? Very confused

In solution, the MgCl2 dissolves as such:

MgCl2  :rarrow: Mg2+ + 2Cl-

Note how one unit of MgCl2 produces two chloride ions (Cl-). For this reason, the concentration of the Cl- ions is twice that of MgCl2
