H2-C-H
« on: January 27, 2012, 02:23:44 PM »
Hi - I am quite the biochemistry novice and need to decipher a formula. Can anyone tell me what:

h2-c-h    represents?

and also:

h-c-oh ?

and lastly is 0h-h-c the same as h-c-oh ?

thanks again to anyone that can help me!

Sorry, I don't think those abbreviations give enough info to help someone who isn't already aware of what they are.  For example, sometimes ethanol will be abbreviated EtOH, and you can see it has the "ethyl-" abbreviation, and the 'OH' lets you know, its an alcohol.  But your abbreviations aren't long enough to give enough context, and don't even balance carbon's charge.  You'll have to ask someone in the lab to decipher it for you.  That's assuming this is a large bottle of solution the lab needs.  If this is a tiny bottle of enzyme or other expensive biomolecule, it could be code for anything.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

h2-c-h or simply CH3 represents the methyl group. It is a portion of an organic molecule that is derived from methane by removal of a hydrogen atom. oh-h-c and h-c-oh cannot be considered as same, as the difference is the bonds between the atoms in both the structures.

Like MichelleWilliams: said (before she posted spam in her sig,) some of the abbreviations make some sense, but others are incomplete.  We need more context to give better information.
