how irritant is 10% hydrochloric acid?
« on: January 22, 2012, 07:50:48 PM »
how irritant is 10% or 3 molar  hydrochloric acid is? I never touched due to fear,I once touched 20% sulfuric one and it was very irritant.

Does its touch differentiate it from water or any other non-irritant solvent??

No, its touch doesn't immediately identify that its acid.  Only strong alkaline solutions free "soapy."  Dilute acids give you time to wash them off.  But, in most modern labs I've been in lately, wearing gloves at all times is a requirement, even if you're not working with something hazardous at that time, so the point of what is really a mild skin irritant and what is a serious skin irritant is moot.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

thanks arkon,i asked this bcoz once i spilled 20% sulfuric acid on hands and it was quite irritant  depicting acidic nature and currently I am working in lab with 10% hydrochloric acid in one project, anyway I am protected with gloves but wanna try 10% one for fun and to realise how it feels, irritant or neutral like water but feared to touch hence asked prior touching.

You must live in a very boring place if you consider dunking your hand in acid "Fun". Seriously dude, it's called a video game. :P

Joking aside, I've seen people use 3 molar solutions of HCl sold as toilet bowl cleaner without gloves, and they seemed fine. Should be okay to try, so long as you have a wash station nearby. And I apologize for the teasing :).
I've been studying chemistry for a few months online. I'm here to learn new things, and share what I've already learned.
