Question about Synthesis balancing? Can someone please help me?
« on: February 05, 2012, 12:08:07 AM »
Hi guys!

I am trying to balance these 2 equations and was wondering whether I am on the right track or not

Cobalt oxalate hydrate:
I have 0.63 g of oxalic acid dihydrate (H2C2O4 * 2H2O), 1.17 g of cobalt II chloride hexahydrate (CoCl2 * 6H2O) and 0.5mL of ammonia (NH3) and I obtained 0.5g of the product, cobalt oxalate hydrate (CoC2H4 &* 2H2O)

So here is my balance chemical equation:
CoCl2 * 6H2O + H2C2O4 * 2H2O + NH3 => CoC2O4 * 2H2O + 6H2O + 2Cl- + NH3 + 2H+

As for a second problem: Nitrate complex

I have 0.590 g of nickel II chloride (NiCl2 * 6H2O), 2.13 g of potassium nitrate (KNO2) and 0.67 g of Strontium chloride (SrCl2 * 6H2O) and after synthesis, I obtained 0.50 g of the product, Nitrate complex (K2NiSr(NO2)6)

And my chemical equation that I came up with is:
3NiCl2 * 6H2O + 3SrCl2 * 6H2O + 6KNO2 => 3K2NiSr (NO2) 6 + 12H2O + 12Cl-

Thanks!

You are mixing ions and molecules in your equations, that's never a good idea. Best approach is to either go net ionic, or balance the equation as fully molecular.
