Best Chemistry Bonding Theory Textbook?
« on: March 15, 2012, 01:58:27 AM »
Hello,

I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations on a good bonding theory book. I already know most of the bonding theories such as valance and mo, but I am looking for a really in depth one that goes deep into the how bonding characteristics and the innate element properties affects its compound's property. To give an example, how silicon is able to be a semiconductor because of its intermediate ionization energy as well as the relatively small energy band gap between its valance and conduction band...so a book that can explain these things...

I know that I am asking a lot, but if anyone can help me I will be extremely grateful,

Thanks

"Best" is a subjective term. Have you tried "Valence Bond Methods, Theory and applications" by Gordon A. Gallup or "Modern Quantum Chemistry. Introduction to Advanced Electronic Structure Theory" by Attila Szabo & Neil O. Ostlund?

I looked up those books and they are way too advanced haha. I just want a general chem bonding theory book similar to chemical bonds by gray but a little bit more in depth about the properties through bonding such as deviations from predicted periodicity trends.

So far as I know, either you give a descriptive or pseudo-descriptive approach about such properties or if you want to derive them (including trends) from theory, then you need the level of the above books. Sorry, I do not know any intermediate and cannot help you.

I see...well do you have any books similar to chemical bonding by gray? I would like to see if there are any other options besides this book.
