emperical and molecular formula.
« on: March 11, 2012, 07:14:29 PM »
ok i need help in going about this problem, step by step.

the problem says the empirical formula os Maleic acid is CHO, (simplest formula, right?)
its Molar mass is 116.1g/mol. what is the molecular formuka?

i need a step by step explanation as to what i should do to get to the answer.
i know i have to figure out the  number of moles of each element in the compound. how do i go about doing it? please *delete me* thanks.

What is the molar mass of the empirical formula CHO?  Once you know that, how much less is it than the real Molar mass?  Try attacking the problem from that angle, and see if it works for you.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

There's a formula to find molecular formula by using empirical formula (CHO here).. try to recall..

first you need to figure out the molar mass of CHO. that is also 1 mole. so you will have the molar mass of 1 mole CHO. the rest is easy. if 1 mole of CHO is that much, how many moles makes 116.1 gr/mole ?

i already found it. but i m a new member here. so i dont know how this forum works. i dont know if we can just write down the answers.
