Flexible PVC degradation
« on: June 05, 2012, 10:25:01 PM »

Hello,  Forgive me but i am a newbie on this forum and very much out of my element.

I have recently purchased a quantity of soft flexible PVC key chain toys....and after several months i have noticed an oily substance on them.

I am told this is plasticizer migration.

I have also noticed a white substance shedding off of them. It looks a bit like skin flakes or dandruff actually.
I am not sure what this is.

 My questions are,

what can i do to extend the life of these toys?

Is there any coating i can apply?  Is there any temperature i can store them at?

Anyway to stop the plasticizer migration? Anyway to have it not impact the shelf life of the toys?

I would appreciate any insight and advice.

 thank you

Oops! You should check how toxic the plasticizer is!
Instead of "impact the shelf life", the urgent question could well be "is contact with users still safe", especially for toys.

Plasticizers are the additives used to make these PVC toys soft. These additives may be the reason for your toys getting degraded. I would suggest you to replace these at suitable timings when they start degrading else it can get converted to a health issue.
