how to monitor formation of Me2CuMgX (cuprates)?
« on: April 26, 2012, 11:19:32 AM »
Hi, all the procedures seems to just dump and stir (MeMgX, CuX, LiX) for a fixed amount of time (30 min to 3 h). Besides the Gilman test (more on this later), is there a way to know when the cuprate is completely formed without using it in the actual reaction?

Regarding the Gilman test, I'm assuming it is supposed to be a biphasic mess with lots of yellow precipitate? The test is an aliquot of my reaction mixture (in THF) with an aliquot of this ketone in toluene and then adding an aliquot of water. I get a gunked up mess when I run this.

Any thoughts? Thanks!
