components of Baking powder
« on: May 11, 2012, 11:58:14 PM »
I'm having some trouble determining the three main components of baking powder. I know that there is an acid (usually cream of tartar), a base (baking soda) and a filler (this I'm not sure about).

Would someone please help me with what the filler usually is and then it's chemical name and formula?
Also, I cannot seem to find the chemical formula for cream of tartar (tartrate salt).
Help would be appreciated thank you so much!

The ingredients are listed on the label of the can.  Once you have the list, you'll see the identity of the filler, and why finding an exact formula isn't likely.  By the way, the acid component isn't only cream of tartar.  That is always an acid, we want another compound that decomposes when heated into an acid, so we get leavening while baking.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
