How does ZnOHNO
3
react in a solution (acid, neutral or basic)?
ZnOHNO
3
Zn
2+
+OH
-
+NO
3
-
-Zn
2+
will make [Zn(H
2
O)
6
]
2+
that reacts like an acid:
[Zn(H
2
O)
6
]
2+
+H
2
O
[Zn(H
2
O)
5
OH]
-
+H
3
O
+
-OH
-
reacts with H
3
O
+
so it is basic.
Is [Zn(H
2
O)
6
]
2+
a stronger acid that OH
-
is a base?

I think your reasoning is correct. I would expect that it would be overall basic, just going off the fact that I've seen K
a
values for aqueous transition metal ions, indicating that they're weak, while I've always though that OH
-
is a strong base.
