Simper immersion of a large, developed, vertebrate will help, but it won't work well. Perfusion, replacing the interior fluids with formalin or other fluid will be needed to keep the tissues in good shape for a long time. Even so, the tissue will still distort, as the osmotic pressure on individual cells wil always be different. Also, feathers and external tissue will discolor after a soak in formalin.
You really have to specify what you need to preserve the bird for -- you said you don't want to embalm it, but if you don't want to really preserve it ... why do you you want to, ... slightly preserve it.
Also, in the couplea weeks since you first asked this question ... how have you preserved it so far?
