Carbon hybridization

When I hybridize carbon (or even oxygen) and then try to fill in the orbitals using Aufbau, Pauli, and Hund's rules I do not get sp2 or sp hybridized orbitals with 1 electron each. What am I doing wrong ? I am following the rules but it seems like hybridization breaks them.

so before I can hybridize, I have to promote electrons (when needed) ?
