Copper acetylide
« on: September 07, 2012, 12:42:48 AM »
Hello everyone!

I am trying to prove the formation of a Copper acetylide. This is done by treating a terminal alkyne with CuI in presence of NEt3 and DMF as solvent.

H≡-R + CuI :rarrow: Cu≡-R

I tried to do this in an NMR-tube and then collecting spectra (comparing with the same substances only without CuI). I integrated the terminal proton agains the deutrated solvent in both cases and found that the terminal proton integral decreased (with addition of CuI).

Any other inputs/stratetgies on how to prove the formation of the Cu≡-R species?

Try replacing the Cu with DCl or HCl. Re-run the NMR.
This is only an indication. You should isolate something and analyse for Cu.
Be careful coper acetylides can be explosive depending upon the R group.
