cyanoacrylate in a base
« on: September 04, 2012, 07:17:21 AM »
When cyanoacrylate(superglue) is added to a base(see below), a color change is produced in the solution after a couple hours.  The color varies from blood red to bright yellow.  Can anyone offer some insight into this please?

in 2 M NaOH --> blood red solid cyanoacrylate floating in blood red solution
in Ba(OH)2 --> blood red solid cyanoacrylate in the bottom of a faint red solution
in Ca(OH)2 -->yellow/orange solid cyanoacrylate in the bottom of an uncolored solution
in NH3 --->  white solid cyanoacrylate in the bottom of bright lemon yellow solution

Thank you very much
