Formation of isocyanides
« on: September 18, 2012, 01:27:04 PM »
We know that when RX forms RCN as major product in presence of alcoholic KCN, where R is an alkyl group. What amazes me is that the same does not apply to alcoholic AgCN.My question is :why does RX+
alc. AgCN produce RNC as major organic product and not RCN?

Thank you.
I am horrible at chemistry.I am always liable to fail my chemistry exams. So, sorry for stupid questions.

Hint 1: The Ag+ interacts with RX before cyanide attacks.

Hint 2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSAB_theory
