Huang-Minglon modification of wolff-kishner
« on: September 17, 2012, 09:20:30 PM »
I have to do the Huang-Minglon modification of the wolff kishner reduction but our professor is only giving us hydrazine sulfate and in most of the stuff I have read it asks for hydrazine hydrate. How would I go about converting it. Do I have to use KOH in 2 equivalent amounts in water and then do a suction filtration?
Thanks

Or perhaps use barium hydroxide? That would salt out?

If you have the HCl salt just add the KOH to it in the reaction solvent.
This will generate the free hydrazine, no need to and don't attempt to isolate it.
Then just carry out the reaction as described.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!
