This is used to protect the ketone. It forms a 5-membered ring cyclic ketal.

Ketones are more reactive than epoxides. What would the product be if the ketal wasn't made first?

Is there an advantage in protecting a ketone in this way, as opposed to the dimethylacetal, for example?
