Among the three reagents, PCl_5, PCl_3 and SOCl_2, which one is preferable in the production of alkyl halides from alcohols and why?
Thanks. This question came to my mind while studying about alkyl halides.

There is not much to choose from here. It will depend a lot on your molecule.
My preference is for thionyl chloride.

I would guess that if all else were equal, thionyl chloride would be the reagent of choice as it is lower boiling and the by-products are gases. That may make isolation of your final product easier.
