Effect of mixing two substance w/ the same melting point?
« on: October 10, 2012, 06:45:26 PM »
The question stated exactly: "Two compounds with the same literature melting point are mixed in equal amounts.  What will be the most likely outcome?"

I think that this would require to know how the two molecules interact, but that information isn't given... so then, I'm assuming the best answer is: "the melting point would be smaller and broader."

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

The melting point would decrease and the melting range would increase. As a small amount of a pure substance is melted, it becomes saturated with the impurity which lowers the vapor pressure.
