CH
3
-S-CH
2
-CH
2
-CH
3
Why is this compound called methyl-propyl-sulfide instead of methyl-1-propyl-sulfide? With the first name, we don't know to which C atom of the propyl group is the S attached.

ChemDraw says it is a sulfane!
methyl(propyl)sulfane
A sulphide is a compound in which two carbon atoms are attached to a S atom C-S-C

Yes, it gave the same result to me, but I don't use the sulfane names. I want to know what is it about the sulfide name.

Well if it was CH
3
-CH
2
-S-CH
2
-CH
3
, which is another possibility it would be diethylsuphide.
So the name infers how many carbons are attached to the S atom. in this case 1 and 3

This possibility: CH
3
-S-CH(CH
3
)
2
is the one that bothers me. This should be methyl-2-propyl-sulfide and the one in the original post methyl-1-propyl-sulfide, but it is called only methyl-propyl-sulfide.

It is isopropyl(methyl)sulphide.

Aren't the prefixes iso-, neo-, tert- and sec- excluded from the IUPAC nomenclature rules?

I thought the opposite. Then: CH
3
-S-CH
2
-CH
2
-CH
3
is methyl-propyl-sulfide and CH
3
-S-CH(CH
3
)
2
is isopropyl-methyl-sulphide as you wrote. Thanks again for the help.
