Crystallization of water-soluble polymer
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:01:57 AM »
Hello everybody,
I need an advise for my attempts to crystallize or precipitate a polymer. I'm an org chemist, new to polymers. I have a task of optimizing a polymerization reaction workup, where Poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate-co-styrene sodium sulfonate) (P(HEMA-co-SS) is obtained in DMSO/MeOH solvent system, and I need to find a set of conditions, where the either product, or the excess monomer can be selectively precipitated or crystallized. I will greatly appreciate if anybody could suggest an idea of how this could be done, or maybe appoint me to good source of polymer procedures. Any comments are very much welcome! I'm looking for any help.
Many thanks!

Maybe ethanol or dioxane can work.

Thanks, I tried them both, and both dissolve the mixture pretty well. I think that the presence of DMSO makes it's impossible to precipitate the product from mixture. It turns out that DMSO helps to control th dispersion of MW, and at the current stage indespencible from the synthesis. Bu thanks for suggestion!

Can you remove the solvents before recrystallization (vacuum)? Of course DMSO will spoil everything. How many grams of material are we talking about.
EtOH/water mixtures should be suitable for the crystallization of the fairly dry crude stuff.
