Transition metal organometallic compound stability
« on: January 04, 2013, 10:01:38 AM »
Good afternoon all, and thank you in advance if you would like post assistance.

My question is regarding the stability of organometallic complexes when you alter the period of transition metal. Eg. If I have rhenium with a bidentate ligand & 4xCO, if I replace the Re with Manganese and keep same ligands (3rd row to first row transition metals).

I heard that the manganese complex is far less stable. Why is this?

I know about the 18 electron rule, and I assume this doesn't change as they are both in the same group (VIIB)

I am not expecting exact answers, just if there is a general trend of stability among transition metal organometallic complexes.

Thank you

Are the metals in some oxidation state? Or shall I assume both have an oxidation state of 0 ?

Stability can be both thermal and kinetic. oxidation states, configurations will give clue.
