Alpha Monoglyceride analysis
« on: January 22, 2013, 02:49:49 AM »
I found in literature to calculate % alpha monoglyceride using periodic acid titration, and the formula is :

% Mono gly = (Vb-Bs)x N x Mw x 10-1/2 x W

My question is why we use Mw/2 for this calculation ?

Thank You

Without even trying to understand the problem, such coefficients usually reflect stoichiometry.

What do those variables denote?

% Mono gly = (Vb-Bs)x N x Mw x 10-1/2 x W
Vb = Blank Titration Volume
Vs= Sample titration volume
N= Normality of Tio Sulphate
Mw= Molecular weight
W = Weight of sample

Titration procedure is using periodic acid. the excess periodic acid than react with potassium Iodide and then titrate with sodium thiosulfate. Each one mole monoglyceride react with one mole periodic acid. But why in calculation we must devide the Molecular weight of Monoglyceride by 2 ?

Please help me to explain this.

Thank You

Write all reaction equations.
