Sonication alternatives
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:54:18 PM »
As far as the process of sonication i dont have the money to buy an expensive device, would subjecting the target mixture to ultrasonic sound have the same effect?

Thanks in advanced  ;)

I may or may not be following you.  Let me ask, where will you get the ultrasound, without an expensive device?  Or do you mean something like blowing a dog whistle at something that needs ultrasonics?  'Cause you shouldn't expect that to work.  Maybe you can rig some sort of ultrasonic equipment against a flexible, water-filled tank.  But I'd doubt that'd be remotely functional, unless almost as expensive as store bought.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

What are you trying to do with your ultrasonic device?

Ultrasonic devices are simply devices which produce pressure waves with a frequency higher than 20,000 Hz (which is about the top edge of human hearing). So any device which vibrates that fast will produce ultrasonic vibrations. The hard part is getting the amplitude of the vibration high enough to do what you want it to do, and focusing it where you want it to be. That is what the expensive devices are for.
