I agree it's difficult in this case to show your attempt, but in more normal questions you can present your attempt.

You check your notes or google for characteristic frequencies/wavelengths of functional groups, then you list these numbers, and explain why they answer/don't answer the question. Effort means "trying to find the information on my own".
