« on: February 26, 2013, 11:56:59 PM »
Can 2 - Aminotoluene be named as 2 - Methyl Aniline or 2 - Methyl benzenamine.

If yes, which among the three is the most appropriate name for the compound.

Thanks.

Can 2 - Aminotoluene be named as 2 - Methyl Aniline or 2 - Methyl benzenamine.

2-Aminotoluene makes sense, people will know what you're talking about, but aniline has higher priority as a parent structure than toluene, so according to IUPAC naming conventions you should go with 2-methylaniline.

Benzeneamide sounds like this (benzamide):

c1ccccc1C(=O)N

And therefore not appropriate.

o-Toluidine/2-toluidine is the common name.
