Determining a Buffer Solution

I know that a buffer solution is made from a weak acid and its conjugate base.

However, in a problem in which different concentrations of acid & base are given, how do you figure out which concentrations make the buffer solution?

Buffer solutions are calculate with the Henderson-Hasselbalch-equation. Refer to this.

Usually we assume buffer works OK when pH doesn't differ by more than 1 unit from the pKa (pKb) of the substance used for buffer preparation. You can easily convert that to concentrations of the acid and its conjugate base.
