synthesis reaction
« on: March 02, 2013, 02:19:55 PM »
If I have propene, can i synthesize glycerol by first doing a syn diol reaction through OsO4 (adding OH to both sides of double bond), then a free radical reaction involving Br2, which would add the Br to the opposite end of the molecule, and then do an SN2 reaction by attacking the Br with OH-, thereby replacing Br with OH?

thanks

Write out the products of each reaction to determine whether these reactions are giving the products expected. Hint, bromine can also be used to oxidize alcohols.
