Vacuum pump and cold trap

Hey everyone ive been looking into vacuum pumps and have run across a problem. Chemistry safe rotary vacuum pumps are way out of my budget and diaphragm pumps don't create a vacuum of at least .04 torr.
So i was looking into a regular rotary vacuum pumps but using a cold trap to prevent harmful gasses from entering my pump.
Would this work?

It will depend on what sort of vapors you'll be pulling. If the cold trap is adequate to condense most of the worst of them, you may avoid damage to the pump for the short term. Though it would probably be best to stick with the chemical safe pumps.
