Conversion of aniline to acetanilide
« on: April 19, 2013, 11:04:26 PM »
Hello,

In the lab, I did a reaction of aniline with acetic anhydride, HCl/H2O, and sodium acetate to produce acetanilide so that I could do a multistep synthesis. I used the acetic anhydride to make my compound less able to react.

My question is, why was the sodium acetate necessary?
