Does anyone know what the brackets around the methyl groups mean?

It just means that they are attached to another ring structure in the molecule. This is probably too complex to draw and the reactions which are being discussed don't affect that part of the molecule. So why draw it?
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!
