General ruthenium question

What's the deal with ruthenium in coordination chemistry? More specifically why do I keep seeing it appear all over the place? Is it really stable? What makes it so special?

It forms a number of very luminescent complexes with polypyridines that have very unique photophysical properties, and thus has found a lot of utility in research related to light harvesting (solar cells), biosensig, and other applications where long-lifetime luminescence is required.
