Experiments
« on: May 21, 2013, 09:07:59 PM »
I'm just looking for some cool things i can do at home that don't require expensive chemicals. Just things i could find around the house. sort of like mixing H2O2 with Manganese Dioxide. Any suggestions?

That's a good one.  Here's a question, once you have the oxygen, what can you do with it?  What other gasses have you heard of?  Can you find simple ways to make those?  And what can you do with those?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Well i'd really just be doing this to watch the reaction. although if i had the right equipment and such, the oxegen would be great in my element collection. As for making the H2O2 and the MnO2 they are very common. H2O2 is simply Hydrogen per Oxide (The ideal consentration for this experiment is 30% but 3% will work too) The MnO2 can be found in any zinc carbon battery.

  did you mean oxygen ??

What test did you do to prove you had oxygen?

i didnt really test anything just did the research. H2O2 is always breaking down into water and oxygen. the MnO2 is just a catylist to speed the reaction to a point that the human eye can actually see.

Acetone and bleach makes chloroform
Electrolysis of KCl gives KClO3

While doing experiments is interesting why not take it to the next step higher?
For instance you produced Oxygen -- why not confirm it?
Did you research the background information regarding your experiment?

I assume you know how to produce carbon dioxide from baking soda and vinegar, but I am not sure since you did not answer some of Arkcon's Questions.

By the way, I GOOGLED
home chemistry experiments
and got lots of hits

Yes i do know how to make CO2. and to answer akrons questions i know of many gasses especially because i've studied the periodic table (its actually my desktop background X3) but as far as off the table, i know a few. Right now i'm probably most interested in sodium hexafluoride. I haven't studied it that much so i don't know how to make it yet.

as for the oxygen test, i have no proper equipment (like beakers, grad. cyl., etc.) I'm basicaly doing experiments out of a cup or bucket or whatever i can find.
