The correct answer is C. How can it not be D as the overall energy change is calculated by subtracting the bond energies of products from reactants. Please tell me in detail. I have asked several people but am not satisfied with their answers.

Is D not vise versa. If the bond energy between H-I is smaller as in H-Cl told in answer C then it must be higher in I-I as in Cl-Cl, not as described like in answer D.
