Physolic acid?
« on: August 20, 2013, 06:19:21 PM »
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out if there is an alternate name for physolic acid. All I gather from the name is that it is likely aromatic and there's a COOH group present. I tried looking it up in the literature and only one brief mention in an article shows up. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

Is this the ref. you found ??
Physolic acid is mentioned in,

Earth-Science Reviews
Volume 45, Issues 1–2, November 1998, Pages 45–60
Geomicrobiology: its significance for geology
Henry L. Ehrlich
Department of Biology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY 12180-3590, USA

Suggest that your library gets this journal issue, or maybe contact Prof. Ehrlich directly.

Are you sure that it is "physolic" and not "physodic" acid ??

If the latter, it is Systematic name

3,8-Dihydroxy-11-oxo-1-(2-oxoheptyl)-6-pentyl-11H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]dioxepine-7-carboxylic acid,

which is isolated from lichens

CAS # 84-24-2
