« on: December 10, 2005, 11:13:27 PM »
I have already bought a few chemistry books for experiments/demonstrations, and i would like more, do you recommend any? Some on the below list are NOT used for experiments and are just for reference.

Favorites are hquoted (though not necesssarily used for experiments)

"Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments (1962)"
Fundamentals of Modern Chemistry
Practical Chemistry (1903)
Exercises in Chemistry (1908)
101 Science Experiments
"Real Book of Science Experiments"
Gilbert 1936 Junior Guide
"Gilbert 1936 Senior Guide"
Gilbert 1952 Junior Guide
Gilbert 1956 Guide
"Visualized Chemistry"

Any recommendations are gladly accepted

There is a series of experiements in Prof. Bassam Z. Shakhashiri's Chemical Demonstrations books.  I only have the first volume but I plan to purchase the rest.  Very well done with explanations and details around hazards & disposal.  You can get more information by Googling for "Chemical Demonstrations".

Where did you get them and for how much? I downloaded the Goglden Book Of Chemistry Experiments but it would be great to have the others, especially the Real Book Of Science Experiments.

Perhaps try Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks.
That book isn't a chemical demonstration book, it is really about the authors childhood, but it has all kinds of talk about experiments Sacks did as a kid.

P.S.  Where can any of the first poster's stuff be downloaded?  I'd be curious to read some old chemistry set manuals, but the only place I ever saw them for sale were fairly expensive.

The first book in his list was discussed before and when I put up a link to it the administrators edited it out. Seems that it might be copyright piracy. Also, the book is long on information and short on safety. So, it was suggested that we not promote that book here.

Google for it and you'll find all kinds of places to source it.  It is very interesting and I can understand why it scares the crap out of most parents.  But it's worth the read if nothing else.  email me if you can't find it and maybe I can help.
