Sorry! I accidentally posted this in the wrong sub-forum previously:

A nomenclature question: if I've got a carbonyl with two groups coming off of it and I want to name the compound so that the ketone part is the suffix (root) of the name, should the suffix by "methanone". The actual compound I want to name is rather complex, but essentially attached to the ketone is:

- one very large group
-a phenyl ring

So is the following name okay, or am I being dense?

(verybigpart-yl)phenylmethanone.

Nothing wrong with that in principal (although I would prefer to see the whole name laid out and the molecule too) , in this case some would use "benzoyl" but I believe the systematic IUPAC nomenclature is phenylmethanone.
