Overall reaction of mechanism with 3 elementary steps?
« on: October 02, 2013, 10:25:39 PM »
ClO- (aq) + H2O (l)  :rarrow: HClO (aq) + OH- (aq)
I- + HClO (aq)  :rarrow: HlO (aq) + Cl- (aq)
OH- (aq) + HlO (aq)  :rarrow: H2O (l) + IO- (aq)

ClO- (aq) + H2O (l)  :rarrow: HClO (aq) + OH- (aq)
I- + HClO (aq)  :rarrow: HlO (aq) + Cl- (aq)
OH- (aq) + HlO (aq)  :rarrow: H2O (l) + IO- (aq)

ClO- (aq) + I- (aq)  :rarrow: Cl- + IO- (aq)

Am I supposed to cross out the intermediates per TWO reactions (i.e. first reaction cancels with second reaction then second reaction cancels with third reaction) or did I do it right above by cancelling everything that were opposites on both sides?
