In the half equation H2SO3 + H2O --> SO42- + 4H+ 2e-, H+ ions are generated, so would an acidified permanganate solution still be necessary? Thank you

Rule of thumbs says that permanganate gets reduced to MnO4- in basic solutions, MnO2 in neutral solutions and Mn2+ in acidic solution, so it all depends on how far you want it reduced.
