Phenol vs aniline - more reactive?
« on: December 03, 2013, 11:33:50 AM »
Hello!

The question is - in reaction with Br2 and NaHCO3 which one is more likely to react - aniline or phenol.

My thoughts on this : nitrogen is less electronegative so it should be more likely to donate electrons to stabilize the intermediate resonance structures, however -NH2 group has two hydrogens compared to only one on the -OH group and hydrogens have their own small electronegativity, so they should draw the electrons from N atom a bit more than the one from O atom.

I am confused. Would appreciate any hints.

Cheers!
