are allylic halides just a subset of alkyl halides? the professor called a compound both an alkyl halide and an allylic halide at the same time so i'm trying to make sense of it.

Yes a subset, I suppose you could call it that. But the C=C confers some interesting properties to the allylic halide in comparison to the alkyl halide.

I would read up on both allylic and homo-allylic alkyl halides. The chemistry is quite interesting.

If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the precipitate

R-X are alkyl halides and if R is CH2=CH-CH2X then it is ally halide. In ally halide X is on the carbon bonded to doubly bonded or sp2 carbon.
